“Fenomenologia dei social network. Presenza, relazioni e consumi mediali degli italiani online”

Moderator: Antonio Pavolini
Speaker: Giovanni Boccia Artieri

What drives millions of people every day to use social networks and consider something they take for granted in their daily lives? Why do many hot topics of recent public debate revolve around online life – from digital narcissism to the loss of privacy – and its continuity with the offline world? In answering these questions, the book goes to the roots of the reality of social networks, to question conditions of possibility and social practices that have allowed communication environments such as Facebook to become a widespread horizon of individual and collective sense and a privileged place of observation the importance that the media and the web have in our lives. Through the stories of users collected as part of a national research project, the work investigates how Facebook has become a social gym where the intertwining of usage practices, forms of consumption and affordability of the platform highlight both the dynamics of socialization to communicative inclusion, and the constant search for meaning and connection.
