This book is about us, people connected through social networks with words, perhaps the most immediate and powerful tool we have available as human beings. Yet we often use them hastily and superficially, without considering their consequences. Since the possibilities for misunderstanding, hostility and distorted interpretations of the facts are highest when we aren’t face to face, such as on the net and in particular on social networks, the words we choose carry a greater weight, on us and those around us. In fact, today’s online communication is poisoned by bullying, fake news and continuous conflicts. We feel trapped by hatred, fear and mistrust. The truth is that we have become hyper-connected, we live offline and online at the same time and it is a complex condition that we need to learn to manage. There are no magic formulas but, each one of us in our own way can make a difference, paying more attention to the way in which we live – and therefore speak – on the web: about ourselves, what’s going on, about and with other people. Ultimately, our interconnected life does not depend on the tools and algorithms, nor on the owners of the platforms: it is up to us to choose who we are and what we want on the web. A sociolinguist and a communication philosopher, expert navigators of the network, show us one of the ways to live in order to finally free the wealth that the web and social networks offer us: learning to master them without letting them crush us, to decipher the messages without letting ourselves be manipulated, to understand and make us understand through a careful and conscious choice of words.
