What happens, in 2018, when we turn on the radio? Very often we are invaded by jingles, advertisements, screaming titles, and pop music distorted by the automatic search. Unfortunately, they tend to be much of a muchness: the pressure of commercialism means that even the large, private, digital networks cannot afford to let these stations experiment or innovate extensively. A very different world, which thanks to the internet we can still explore, is that of the radio community. Popular especially far from our borders, often managed by volunteers and financed by free contributions from listeners, these stations are proof that an alternative, even in terms of financial sustainability, is possible. Breaking free from the constraint of advertising also allows these entities to actively explore new languages. Thanks mainly to online participation, for many years EU radio stations have been able to promote alternative arts and cultures, discuss different political agendas, aggregate, mobilize and involve listeners directly in the territory.
