While the story plays a fundamental role in the player’s involvement in a game, the design of the gameplay must take account of aesthetic coherence: the player’s actions should never clash with those of their avatar in the story. For this purpose, the game theme, the semantic core of the experience, is the permanent reference for the design and guarantor of the narrative play. In this talk on game design, Vincenzo Santalucia, game/narrative designer of the official game of the Netflix series Suburra, tells us about the approach and the design process he followed to try to build a memorable, recognizable and coherent experience.
