Language is in continuous movement and adapts itself to the needs of the speakers and their communication needs. What were once considered errors, no longer are today (for example, the use of the singular they) and forms that we were taught were wrong, aren’t at all. The relationship that speakers have with their own language is also changing: in Italy, the spoken language used to be predominantly dialect – now it is Italian; once, the relationship with the written language was confined only to school and work, but today everyone is confident with using a keyboard, and there is a much a greater tolerance of errors (despite the number of grammar-nerds). The Accademia della Crusca observes these changes, analyses and describes them, and is always ready to answer any linguistic questions. But the relationship with La Crusca has also changed over time: the sense of distance and awe that, until a few decades ago, characterized the relationship between the Academy and ordinary people, has gradually changed for many, fortunately not for all, thanks to the internet (the site and above all social networks), losing the recognition, respect and value of the word of experts, who are linguists by profession.
