Why is it so hard to think of animals as our equals? Chances are most of you’ll respond that they are just not as intelligent as we are. And yet, while developing the chat-based game Avery, I have come to realise that if the AI was too smart, too quick to respond, too analytical, it wouldn’t feel…right. I needed to dumb her down. To make her flawed. To give her pause. To make her respond to conversations as humans would. Perhaps we don’t want machines to be smart. We want them to be like us, and to respond to us. To create someone or something else that knows, deep down, how it feels to be human. Perhaps when we think “intelligent being”, what we truly mean is “human”, “flawed”, “familiar”. How can we make games more intelligent and, therefore, flawed in the ways humans are?
